Implementing Live Courses on Udemy | UX, UI Design casestudy

Project brief

Overview
The task is to design a new feature for Udemy that allows for live classes. The feature will enable students to attend live classes with instructors, interact with them, and ask questions in real-time.

Business goals
The business goals of this feature are to increase engagement, retention, and revenue for Udemy. By offering live classes, Udemy can provide a more interactive learning experience, which can lead to increased engagement and retention. Additionally, live classes can be offered as a premium feature, generating additional revenue for Udemy.

KPIs of success
Number of students attending live classes
Average time spent in live classes
User engagement and satisfaction with live classes
Retention rate of users who attend live classes
Revenue generated from live classes

Rationale
Udemy is a popular e-learning platform that provides access to thousands of courses online. While students can watch pre-recorded videos, there is no live interaction with instructors. By adding live classes, Udemy can offer a more immersive and interactive learning experience, allowing students to receive feedback, ask questions, and learn from instructors in real-time.

Task
Design end-to-end experience for user interaction with live classes. From seeing a course that offers live classes through the learning process.

Audience
The audience for this feature would be Udemy’s existing user base, which includes people of all ages and backgrounds looking to learn new skills or improve existing ones. Live classes would be particularly appealing to those seeking more personalised attention and interaction with instructors.

Competitor Analysis

Having a look a Udemys page comparing it to 3 totally different learning and course platforms to see how common live courses are in different niches and to see how they are implemented.

Sacrificial Concepts

Sketching the first ideas as sacrificial concepts on how to implement the live course feature on Udemy. Here the focus was particularly on where to implement the live courses on the landin page and how to distinguish them from on demand courses. Further the concepts show the ‚My learning‘ section where the students find their booked courses.

User Flow

Usability Test

Designing a prototype in Figma, having a Test script ready to conduct the usability test via useberry.
